Importers Support East Lampung Blue Crab Fishermen Cooperative

Cooperatives formed after the extension of the Department of Cooperatives and SMEs Lampung Timur was named Karya Muda Bahari Cooperative, chaired Syamsudin, with a membership of 37 people early local crab fishermen.

Also present on the occasion CEO of PT Blue Star Nusantara (BSN) Yoga Sadana, Secretary General of the Association of Management Rajungan Indonesia (APRI) Bambang Arif Nugroho, Head of Department of Cooperatives and SMEs East Lampung M Novriadie, Chairman HNSI East Lampung Bayu Witara, deputy head of the village of Muara Ivory Mas Edi Susilo, and crab fishermen who are members of the cooperative in question.

On the sidelines of the event, Neel Inamdar of Wilderness Market, US told Antara confirmed the support of his organization.

“The main purpose of support to the establishment of this cooperative is a crab fishery conservation and also the welfare of fishermen,” he said.

While John R Keeler added that the cooperative is a unique collaborative approach between the public and the government based on social culture.

“Through the establishment of the cooperative is expected to create fishing access on the regulation, and the governance of catching crabs are good,” he said.

Meanwhile, Yoga Sadana of BSN stated that the industry hopes to achieve the management of crabs can get certified MSC (Marine Stewardship Council).

“Through the fishermen organized formally in the form of cooperatives, it is believed it could be realized. Fishermen themselves expecting increased their welfare as one of the objectives of this cooperative formation,” he said.

As the only fishing cooperative with the primary goal the preservation of crabs, he said, the fishermen also expect their government to help small crab fishing gear and capital.

Institutional Head of Department of Cooperatives and SMEs East Lampung M Novriadie confirms that accesses aid to fishermen from the government will be more easily through institutions such as cooperatives and not to individual fishermen.

“With gathered through cooperative, then it will be easier access,” he said.

Secretary General Arif APRI Bambang Nugraha refers gained power states that the value of blue crab exports Indonesia in 2014 exceeded 308 million US dollars or about Rp 4 trillion.

“This shows that the crab is still a fascinating commodity sales volume remains high, although immediately corrected by 2016,” he said.

East Lampung district as one source of fishery crab important contributing 15 percent of the total production of crab national, and today has been declared by the government to become a pilot initiative blue crab fisheries management sustained by the Directorate of Fish Resources (PSDI), DG Fish, Marine Affairs and Fisheries.
